Hanumathodi
You must have probably heard about the raga Thodi and let us tell you it is the same as Hanumathodi. There are very few or no musicians who haven’t heard or sung songs in Hanumathodi as this is a much loved and popular raga. Hanumathodi is the 8th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music.
Even though it is not very easy to sing this raga, it is often heard in concerts more because of its soothing effect that makes it perfect for melodious songs. This factor makes it a rakti raga. Its complexity takes birth from the fact that it involves difficult prayogas. Thodi brings home the rasas of bhakthi and karuna. Singers give importance to gamakas when singing this raga. This is more so true when singing the notes Ga and Ni. Ga, Ma and Da are ragachaya swaras while Ma and Pa are amshaswaras.

The swaras of Hanumathodi are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadham. This sampoorna raga is a shuddha madhyamam equivalent of the 44th Melakarta raga Bhavapriya.
Hanumathodi is the second raga in Netra chakra with Mnemonic name Netra-Sri. Called Janatodi in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music, its western counterpart is known as PHRYGIAN MODE.

It is also similar to BHAIRAVI thaat in Hindusthani music. Note that Todi thaat of Hindusthani music is not the same as Hanumathodi raga. The Carnatic music equivalent of Hindusthani ragaTodi is the 45th Melakarta raga, Shubhapantuvarali. When shifted using Graha Bhedam
you will get five ragas – Kalyani, Shankarabharanam, Kharaharapriya, Natabhairavi and Harikambhoji.
The specialty of Hanumathodi is that it is sung in all lower notes. The raga has a long list of janya ragas to its credit among which the popular ones are Janatodi, Shuddha seemanthini, Punnagavarali, Asaveri and Dhanyasi. Todi is such a special raga that there is rarely any composer who has not created a song in this beautiful raga.
Owing to the love for this raga, Thyagaraja did around 32 compositions in it and each of these compositions start at every single swara of the three octaves. A kriti almost always heard in concerts, Thaye yashoda, is a very famous composition by Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi. Another popular one is a varnam Era napai by Patnam Subramania Iyer. Some of the best known compositions in Hanumathodi are Daani Samajendra by Swathi Thirunal, Shri Krishnam Bhajamaanasa by Muthuswami Dikshitar, Kadhanu variki by Thyagaraja and Raave Himagiri Kumari by Syama Sastri.
