Vishwambari
A vivadi mela with not many compositions to boast of, Vishwambari is the 54th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. It is commonly referred to as Vamshavati in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music.
Arohana: S R1 G3 M2 P D3 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 P M2 G3 R1 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, shatsruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. This sixth raga in Brahma chakra has mnemonic name Brahma-Sha. Having all the seven notes, Vishwambari is a sampoorna raga and is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Hatakambari, the 18th Melakarta raga.
Vishwambari has a few janya ragas like Hemangi, Pooshakalyani and Sharadhyuthi. Some of the popular compositions in this raga include Paramananda by Koteeswara Iyer, Bhaktavatsalam by Muthuswami Dikshitar and Vijayatam Shri rajarajeswarim by Mysore Jayachamaraja Wodeyar. There exist two ragas obtained by shifting the notes of Vishwambari by Graha bhedam – Shamalangi and Ganamoorti.
