Vagadheeswari
Vagadheeswari is a sampoorna raga that ranks as 34th in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. Known as Bhogachhayanata in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, this is the fourth raga in the Rutu chakra with mnemonic name Rutu-Bhu.
Arohana: S R3 G3 M1 P D2 N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D2 P M1 G3 R3 S
The swaras of this raga are shadjam, shatsruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. Replacing the shuddha madhyamam of Vagadheeswari with prathi madhyamam gives the raga Nasikabhooshani, the 70th Melakarta raga.
This vivadi mela evokes a feeling of karuna in the listeners and sometimes a mystical atmosphere is built up where this raga is recited. The rishabham is often sung as deerkha shatsruthi rishabham to avoid the vivadi dosha. Ri, Ga, Ma and Ni are the raga chaaya swaras. Shifting the notes of Vagadheeswari using Graha bhedam gives the ragas Naganandini and Bhavapriya.
The janya ragas of Vagadheeswari include Bhanumanjari, Chayanattai, Maghathi etc. The first composition in this raga was written by Thyagaraja.
When he composed Paramatmudu, he took great enthusiasm in praising Saraswathi who is the Goddess of wisdom, learning and music. Some of the other compositions in Vagadheeswari include Varna Vagadheeswari by Sri C. Honnappa Bhagavatar, Pranamaamyaham by Balamuralikrishna and Vagadheeswari Sarade by T. Sreenidhi.
In the movie industry, there are just two Tamil songs set to this raga – Vennilavin Perai Matrava from the movie Ramanaa and Narumana Malargalin from Urangatha Ninaivugal.
