Vachaspati
There are many ragas in South Indian classical music that are soothing to listen and as a result borrowed into Hindustani. Vachaspati, the 64th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, is one such raga. In Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music, it is called Bhushavati. The literal meaning of Vachaspati is Lord of speech.
Arohana: S R2 G3 M2 P D2 N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D2 P M2 G3 R2 S
The notes of Vachaspati are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. This sampoorna raga is the fourth one in the Rudra chakra with mnemonic name Rudra-Bhu. Replacing the prati madhyamam with shuddha madhyamam gives Harikambhoji, the 28th Melakarta raga.
All the notes of Vachaspati are suited for gamaka prayogas. Ma and Ni are jeeva swaras and Ga and Pa are amsha swaras. The prominent emotion evoked by the raga is sringara. But one can also feel many other emotions that relax the mind while listening to its recital. The all time raga brings lot of energy and completely removes the stress of the mind.
Vachaspati has many janya ragas like Bhagavataranjana, Bhogeeshwari and Bhooshavali. A very famous janya raga of Vachaspati is Saraswathi, which is often used in movie songs. Compositions like Kantajoodumi by Thyagaraja, Pahi jaga janani by Swathi Thirnal and Paraatparaa by Papanasam Sivan are all set to this raga.
There is only one movie song in Vachaspati raga - Nikkattumaa Pogattuma from the movie Periya Veetu Pannakkaran. Three ragas are obtained by shifting the notes using Graha bhedam. They are Gourimanohari, Charukesi and Natakapriya.
