Shulini (Sulini)
Shulini is known for being a vivadi mela much like its predecessor and is not much suited for compositions. It is the 35th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. It is referred to as Shailadesakshi in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music.
Arohana: S R3 G3 M1 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R3 S
The notes are shadjam, shatsruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. Being the 5th raga in the Rutu chakra, it has the mnemonic name Rutu-Ma. This sampoorna raga is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of Kosalam, the 71st Melakarta raga.
Shulini has janya ragas like Dheerahindolam and Shokavarali but again they are rarely heard in concerts much like their parent raga. Some of the compositions in this raga are Paramukhamadeno by Koteeswara Iyer, Prana natha by Thyagaraja and Nalinanarayani by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. Shifting the notes of this raga using Graha bhedam gives the ragas Dhenuka, Shanmukhapriya and Chitrambari.
