Sucharitra
Aditya chakra, the 12th chakra, starts with the 67th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Sucharitra. It is known as Santana manjari in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music.
Arohana: S R3 G3 M2 P D1 N1 S
Avarohana: S N1 D1 P M2 G3 R3 S
The notes of Sucharitra are shadjam, shatsruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and shuddha nishadam. The mnemonic name of the raga is Aditya-Pa. It is a sampoorna raga which gives the 31st Melakarta raga Yagapriya when the prati madhyamam is replaced with shuddha madhyamam.
No ragas are derived from Sucharitra. A few compositions in this raga are Chintayami santatam by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Harinamada araaginiyu by Purandara Dasa and Velu mayil by Koteeswara Iyer. Using Graha bhedam to shift the notes gives no other ragas. As it is a vivadi mela, there is not much scope for alapana and as a result, there aren’t too many songs in it.
