Shanmukhapriya
A famous raga, Shanmukhapriya is used in songs praising Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan. It is the 56th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and commonly known as Chamaram in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music. This raga is best suited to bring in the feeling of devotion and musicians have taken advantage of this to make many melodious devotional songs. The literal meaning of Shanmukhapriya is ‘the one dearest to Lord Shanmukha’.

The notes of Shanmukhapriya are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, sadharana gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shudha dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. This is the second raga in the Disi chakra with mnemonic name Disi-Sri. Legends say that this raga is adopted into Hindustani from Carnatic music.
This sampoorna raga is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Natabhairavi, the 20th Melakarta raga. Ragas like Bhashini, Dhanakari and Garigadya are all derived from this moorchanakaaraka mela. Concerts witness an array of songs set to this raga and some of them include Marivere Dikkevarayya by Patnam Subramania Iyer, Vaddane vaaru by Thyagaraja and Parvati nayakane by Papanasam Sivan.
The notes of Shanmukhapriya offer lot of scope for elaborate alapana much to the delight of music enthusiasts. The beauty of the raga is enhanced by jandaswara prayoga, daattuswara prayoga and enticing gamaka prayoga. This is a sarvakaalika raga with ragachaya swaras as Ni and Ri. Listening to songs in this raga has a soothing effect on the body and mind including sharpening the brain and filling the body with positive energy.
Don’t be surprised if musicians are reciting manodharma swaras in Shanmukhapriya along with many other beautiful prayogas. This is one of the main ragas repeatedly heard in concerts. One can portray many rasas like karuna, shringara and atbudha using the notes of this raga.
