Shamalangi
The 55th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Shamalangi is also spelt Shyamalangi. This sampoorna raga is referred to as Shamalam in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. Unfortunately, the raga is not much heard in concerts and used in song compositions.

Avarohanam: S N1 D1 P M2 G2 R2 S
The swaras are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, sadharana gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and shuddha nishadam. Shamalangi marks the beginning of the next chakra Disi and has the mnemonic name Disi-Pa. The 19th Melakarta raga Jhankaradhwani is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of Shamalangi.
The raga has very few janya ragas like Deshavali and Vijayamalavi. Some of the compositions set to this raga include Vinati chakonavayya by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Veera raghava by Koteeswara Iyer and Namo Namaste geervani by Muthuswami Dikshitar. Two ragas are obtained by shifting the notes of Shamalangi using Graha Bhedam. They are Ganamoorti and Vishwambari.
