Salagam
When the seventh chakra Rishi starts with raga Salagam, the note shuddha madhyamam that was present in every raga till its predecessor paves way to the beautiful note prati madhyamam which takes over for the rest of the ragas. Salagam ranks as the 37th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and is referred to as Sowgandini in Mthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music.
Arohanam: S R1 G1 M2 P D1 N1 S
Avarohanam: S N1 D1 P M2 G1 R1 S
Note that all the swaras except prati madhyamam are shudda swaras namely shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, shuddha dhaivatham and shuddha nishadam. The mnemonic name of this raga is Rishi-Pa. There are not many compositions in this vivadi mela and is rarely heard in concerts. This sampoorna raga is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Kanakangi, the first raga in the Melakarta system.
Salagam has only a few minor janya ragas and shifting the notes of this parent raga using Graha bhedam gives no other ragas. Two of the notable compositions in this raga are Varana vadanam by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Ganamrudham by Koteeswara Iyer.
