Rishabhapriya
Rishabhapriya is the 62nd raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. Referred to as Ratipriya in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music, this sampoorna raga is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Charukesi, the 26th Melakarta raga.
Arohana: S R2 G3 M2 P D1 N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D1 P M2 G3 R2 S
The notes of Rishabhapriya are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. This second raga in the Rudra chakra has the mnemonic name Rudra-Sri. There are only a few janya ragas for this parent raga, like Gopriya and Poornasaveri. In Western music, the Lydian minor scale has great similarity with Rishabhapriya.
Compositions like Maara ratipriyam by Muthuswami Dikshitar, Ghana naya desika by Koteeswara Iyer and Nandisam vande by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna are set to Rishabhapriya. Kokilapriya is the raga obtained by shifting the notes of Rishabhapriya using Graha bhedam. Performing Graha bhedam on Gopriya raga (janya raga)gives the same raga again and again. This specialty is due to the fact that the notes of Gopriya are equally separated in frequency.
There are just two Malayalam songs set to Rishabhapriya. They are Maaruvathille Lokame from the film Aatmashanthi and Swarangal paadasarangalil from Mahabali. But concerts rarely see recitals of songs in this raga.
