Roopavathi
Known as Roopavathi itself in the Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, this raga which is the 12th one in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music literally means ‘the beautiful one’.
Arohana: S R1 G2 M1 P D3 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 P M1 G2 R1 S
The notes of Roopavathi are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, shatsruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadham. With all the seven notes, it is a sampoorna raga and is the madhyamam equivalent of the 48th Melakarta raga Divyamani. As opposed to most of the ragas, shifting the notes of Roopavathi using Graha Bhedam gives no other ragas.
Being the sixth raga in the Netra chakra, the mnemonic name of Roopavathi is Netra-Sha. The 12th Melakarta raga in the list made by Venkatamakhin is also given the same name Roopavathi. Though the notes are same, the scales are svarantara-shadava raga meaning six are used in descending scale and four in ascending scale.
Arohana: S R1 M1 P S S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 N3 P M1 G2 S
Roopavathi has only a few janya ragas including Rowpianaka and Shyamakalyani. This raga is not much popular in concerts but you can listen to some of them at times including Ne More bettina by Thyagaraja, Paalayamaam Sree Parvatha Nandini by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Sri Krishna bhajare by Muthuswami Dikshitar.
