Neetimati
The 60th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Neetimati, is known as Nishadham in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music. This sampoorna raga is the sixth and last raga in the Disi chakra with mnemonic name Disi-Sha.
Arohana: S R2 G2 M2 P D3 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 P M2 G2 R2 S
The notes of Neetimati are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, sadharana gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shatsruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. Being a vivadi mela, this is raga rarely heard in concerts. Changing the prati madhyamam of the raga to shuddha madhyamam gives Varunapriya, the 24th Melakarta raga.
There are only a few ragas derived from Neetimati among which Hamsanadam is well-known. A few compositions include Vachamgochara by Thyagaraja, Aravinda Lochanane by Ambujam Krishna and Smaranam by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. When shifted using Graha bhedam, the notes of Neetimati gives the raga Gangeyabhooshani. There is just one Malayalam song in this raga – Ellam Enikkullathellam from the album Shivaganga.
