Raghupriya is again not a popular raga among music lovers owing to the fact that it is a vivadi raga having not many compositions. This raga occurs as the 42nd one in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and is given the name Ravikriya in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. The meaning of Raghupriya is ‘the one dear to Raghu’.
Arohana: S R1 G1 M2 P D3 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 P M2 G1 R1 S
The swaras of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shatsruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. When you replace the prati madhyamam of Raghupriya with shuddha madhyamam, the resultant raga is Tanaroopi, the 6th Melakarta raga.
Raghupriya is the final raga in Rishi chakra with mnemonic name Rishi-Sha. It has janya ragas like Gandharva and Gomati. Some of the compositions in this raga include Himagiri Kumari by Muthuswami Dikshitar, Khalitaka vamsa by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Sadananda by Koteeswara Iyer.
Like all the other ragas in the Rishi chakra, shifting the notes of Raghupriya using Graha bhedam gives no other ragas the reason being the gap of three notes between G1and M2. As expected this raga is seldom used in movie songs.
