Jhankaradhwani
The fourth chakra Veda starts with Jhankaradhwani which is the 19th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. It has the mnemonic name Veda-Pa. The Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music calls it Jhankarabhramari.
Arohana: S R2 G2 M1 P D1 N1 S
Avarohana: S N1 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and shuddha nishadham. All the ragas till now had shuddha rishabham while the notes from Ga onwards kept changing. Jhankaradhwani is the first raga where you can find chathusruthi rishabham. This sampoorna raga is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of raga Shamalangi which is the 55th Melakarta raga.
On comparing the notes of Jhankaradhwani and Jhankarabhramari, it is seen that the latter has different arohana and avarohana than the former with the notes being used in zig zag order or vakra prayoga. This can be seen below.
Arohana: S R2 G2 M1 P D1 N1 D1 P D1 S
Avarohana: S N1 D1 P M1 G2 R2 G2 R2 S
Jhankaradhwani has only a few janya ragas like Bharathi and Chitharanjani. Compositions like Phanipati sayee by Thyagaraja, Varnam tharum by Koteeswara Iyer and Jhasha Kethana Pitaram by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna are set to this raga which is not a very popular one among musicians.
Shifting the notes of this raga using Graha bhedam gives two other ragas – Ratnangi and Gamanashrama. Jhankaradhwani is a raga with very few songs set to it and is also a vivadi mela.
