Jhalavarali
‘A moon with the sun’s heat’ – this is what Jhalavarali means. Known as Dhalivarali in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, Jhalavarali is the 39th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. It occurs as the third raga in the Rishi chakra and has mnemonic name Rishi-Go.
Arohana: S R1 G1 M2 P D1 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D1 P M2 G1 R1 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. The jeeva swaras are Ga, Ma and Ni and the Amsa swara is Sa. When the prati madhyamam is changed to shuddha madhyamam, this samporna raga becomes Ganamoorthi which is the third Melakarta raga.
With karuna and sringara as the feelings evoked by this raga, it is also sometimes associated with the viraha feeling which portrays the separation of lovers. Some scriptures also define the meaning of this vivadi mela as the ‘sound of a bee’. It is also a gamaka pradhana raga meaning the notes are recited with gamakas to add beauty.
Jhalavarali has a few janya ragas like Bhoopalapanchamam, Godari, Jalasugandhi etc. It is also the parent raga of the much celebrated Varali raga. A few famous compositions set to this raga include Madhava dayya by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Namami sri rama and Anatha rakshaka by Thyagaraja.
