Jalarnavam
Just a note different from Salagam, this raga again is not much used for compositions as it is a vivadi mela. The 38th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Jalarnavam, is known as Jaganmohanam in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. The literal meaning of the word Jalarnavam is ‘the ocean’.
Arohana: S R1 G1 M2 P D1 N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D1 P M2 G1 R1 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. Ratnangi, the 2nd Melakarta scale is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of this sampoorna raga.
Jalarnavam has only a minor raga associated with it. It is the second raga in the Rishi chakra with mnemonic name Rishi-Sri. Two of the popular compositions in this raga are Maheswari kavuma uma by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Kanaka mayura by Koteeswara Iyer. Shifting the notes of this raga using Graha bhedam gives no other raga.
