Harikambhoji
A peaceful raga that overflows with positivity, Harikambhoji is one of the oldest known ragas. Many thanks to the great musician Thyagaraja who revived this raga and brought it back with his soothing compositions when it almost died in the minds of people long time back.
The most interesting thing about the raga Harikambhoji is that the number of its janya ragas touches nearly 100. This special raga is the 28th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and has counterparts in both Hindustani and western music. In Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, this raga is referred to as Harikedaragowla.
If you are familiar with the melodic music Pann used by the Tamil people in their music, you might have heard about Sempaalai pann. But the first scale used by them was the Mullaipann which later became Sempaalai pann with some extra notes added. This evolved scale Sempaalai pann corresponds to Harikambhoji. Mixolydian mode of western music and Khamaj thaat of Hindustani music are the representations of Harikambhoji in these two music styles.

The swaras of this raga are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadham. Ri and Ni are sung with gamaka prayogas in this moorchanakaaraka mela. Harikambhoji is the fourth raga in Bana chakra with mnemonic name Bana-Bhu. It has all the seven swaras and is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of Vachaspati, the 64th Melakarta raga.
You guessed it right Kambhoji is the janya raga of Harikambhoji and is the most popular among its janya ragas. The all-time-favourite Mohanam is also a janya that appears very often in concerts and movie songs. Other famous janya ragas include Kamas, Sahana, Suruti, Yadukula kambhoji etc. Shifting the notes of Harikambhoji using Graha bhedam gives Sankarabharanam, Kalyani, Kharaharapriya, Natabhairavi and Hanumathodi.
Because of the love of this raga, Thyagaraja composed several songs in Harikambhoji including Entara Neethana, Ramanannu brovara, Chanthodi and many others. Other kritis are Enadhu Nirdaya by Papanasam Sivan, Saketha Nagara Natha by Mysore sadashiva Rao, Vinata Suta Vahanudai by KV Srinivasa Iyengar etc. In a way, it can be said that Tamil movie industry has thrived on Harikambhoji with some very popular A. R. Rahman hits like Uyire Uyire and Chinna chinna Aasai set to this raga. Let us see what are the other compositions.
