Ganamoorthi
Ganamoorthi is the third raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. This raga that literally means ‘the idol of music’ is known as Ganasamavarali in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. The mnemonic name of Ganamoorthi is Indu-Go and is the third raga in the first chakra Indu.
Arohana: S R1 G1 M1 P D1 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D1 P M1 G1 R1 S
This sampoorna raga has the following notes: Shadjam, shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham, kakali nishadham. Ga, Ni and Ri of Ganamoorthi are sung as deergha and ragachaaya swaras. It is a raga that evokes feelings of sadness and is a vivadi mela.
Replacing the shuddha madhyamam with prati madhyamam gives the 39th Melakarta raga jalavarali. The notes of Ganasamavarali are slightly different from the original Ganamoorthi.
Arohana: S R1 M1 P D1 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D1 P M1 G1 R1 S
Ganamoorthi has only a few janya ragas like BhinnaPanchamam, Samavarali etc. Ganamoorthe sri Krishna by Thyagaraja is a much loved composition in this raga and so is Pahi jagadiswara by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. When shifted using Graha bhedam, this raga gives two other Melakarta ragas, namely, Vishwambari and Shamalangi.
