Gamanashrama
A Hindustani music lover must have heard about Gamanashrama as it is a raga very similar to Marva thaat in Hindustani Classical music. Gamanashrama is the 53rd raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music but more popularly known as Gamakakriya in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music.
Arohana: S R1 G3 M2 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D2 P M2 G3 R1 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. The shuddha madhyamam equivalent of Gamanashrama is Suryakantam, the 17th Melakarta raga.
This sampoorna raga is the fifth raga in the Brahma chakra with mnemonic name Brahma-Ma. Ragas like Alankari, Hamsanandi, Poorvikalyani and Mechakangi are janya ragas of this parent raga. Even though not a famous one for concert recitals, janya ragas like Hamsanandi and Poorvikalyani find their way to concert platforms. A few famous compositions in Gamanashrama are Sri Chakrapura vasini by Muthiah Bhagavatar, Meenakshi Memudam by Muthuswami Dikshitar and Ubhaya kaveri by Veene Sheshanna.
Shifting the notes of this raga using Graha bhedam gives two melakarta ragas – Jhankaradhwani and Ratnangi. There isn’t even a single film song in Gamanashrama but there are a few Tamil songs in Poorvikalyani like Sandhikka Thudittaen from the movie Vedham Pudhithu and Arul Jothi Deivam from Thisai Maariya Paravaigal.
