Dhavalambari
When the list of Melakarta ragas is carefully examined, it can be seen that there are many ragas having very few compositions set to them and Dhavalambari is one among them. Dhavalambari is the 49th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and is referred to as Dhavalangam in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. The karuna rasa evoked during the recitation of this raga brings a calming effect in listeners.
Arohana: S R1 G3 M2 P D1 N1 S
Avarohana: S N1 D1 P M2 G3 R1 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and shuddha nishadam. Being the first raga in the Brahma chakra which is the ninth chakra, it has the mnemonic name Brahma-Pa. Gayakapriya, the 13th Melakarta raga is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of Dhavalambari.
The sampoorna raga Dhavalambari has only a few janya ragas like Abhiramam and Darmini. Three popular compositions in this raga are Srivani pustaka pani by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Karvaya kanda by Koteeswara Iyer and Sringaradi by Muthuswami Dikshitar. No raga is obtained by shifting the notes of Dhavalambari using Graha bhedam.
