Chithrambari
The 66th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Chitrambari is commonly referred to as Chaturangini in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music. Being only a note different from Kalyani, this raga has got the pleasing effect offered by its predecessor.
Arohana: S R2 G3 M2 P D3 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 P M2 G3 R2 S
The notes of Chitrambari are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shatsruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. The sampoorna raga is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Naganandini, the 30th Melakarta raga. This final raga in the Rudra chakra has the mnemonic name Rudra-Sha.
Amritavarshini is the only popular janya raga of Chitrambari. Two classical compositions in the parent raga are Samaganalola by Koteeswara Iyer and Sri rama nelami by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. Shifting the notes of this raga using Graha bhedam gives the ragas Shoolini, Shanmukhapriya and Dhenuka. As it is a vivadi mela, the scope of alapana is less and so is the number of songs in it.
