Bhavapriya
The 44th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Bhavapriya means ‘the one who is dear or Bhava or Shiva’. It is the second raga in the chakra Vasu and has mnemonic name Vasu-Sri. Referred to as Bhavani in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, Bhavapriya is widely accepted as a Rakti raga that gives more scope to melodious compositions.

The swaras are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. As it is a Melakarta raga, it is definitely a sampoorna raga that is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Hanumathodi, the 8th Melakarta raga.
Reciting Bhavapriya with a lot of gamakas is the norm and something which makes this raga beautiful. Ni, Ri and Pa are jeevaswaras and Pa is the amshaswara. Don’t be surprised if you listen to Bhavapriya and thought it was Shubhapanduvaraly. As the latter is just a note different from the former, the similarity is natural.
Bhavapriya has only a minor janya raga derived from it. A few famous compositions in this raga include Maam avasrita by Swathi Thirunal, Srikanta niyeda by Thyagaraja and Sentiru velan by Koteeswara Iyer. There is one album song set to Bhavapriya – Mahishiye samsaara from Ayyappa Gaanangal. When shifted using Graha bhedam, the notes of this raga gives Vagadheeswari and Naganandini.
