Navaneetham
Navaneetham is yet another vivadi mela that is rarely heard in concerts and other musical platforms. It is the 40th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, referred to as Nabhomani in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. The meaning of Navaneetham is ‘the eternal new one’. One can also split the word as nava meaning fresh and neetham meaning butter.
Arohana: S R1 G1 M2 P D2 N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D2 P M2 G1 R1 S
The swaras are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. The shuddha madhyamam equivalent of this sampoorna raga is Vanaspati, the fourth Melakarta raga. Navaneetham is the fourth raga in the Rishi chakra with mnemonic name Rishi-Bhu.
Surprisingly, Navaneetham has no janya ragas. Some of the popular compositions in this raga are Lemidelpa peddavaru by Thyagaraja, Umapati pahi by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Sami ide nalla samayam by Koteeswara Iyer.
