MAYAMALAGOWLA
Anyone who has learned Carnatic Music will never forget Mayamalagowla
as this is the first raga taught to beginners. It is the 15th melakarta raga
and is known as a morning raga.
Arohana: S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S

Singing Mayamalagowla in the early morning hours gives you peace of
mind with its soothing notes. Listening to songs in this raga is also said to
bring to mind traces of sadness and pity. As the raga is symmetric in
nature, the distance between the swara sthanas is uniform making it easy
for beginners to learn and master.
Being a sampurna raga, Mayamalagowla has all the seven notes in it
making it possible to have a number of janya ragas.
Some of the popular
janya ragas of this raga include Saveri, Bowli, Gowla, Malahari and many
others. Adikkondar by Muthu Thandavar and Deva Deva by Swathi
Thirunal are two important compositions in this raga that are etched in the
minds of classical music lovers.
Interestingly, Mayamalagowla is similar to Bhairav which is an Indian
classical raga and Double harmonic scale of western music. Like
Mayamalagowla.
Bhairav is also a morning raga and finds its place in the
beginning pieces in concerts. This raga of its own Thaat has scales similar
to Mayamalagowla but it is observed that when they are performed, they
craft different moods due to the unique ways they are rendered.
Composers choose Bhairav when they want to create something serious in
mood or need to build a devotional atmosphere.
Arohana: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa
Avarohana: Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa
The sequence of steps that make up the Double harmonic scale in relation
to the tonic note is
minor second, major third, perfect fourth and fifth, minor sixth, major
seventh, octave (C - Db- E - F - G - Ab- B – C)

But it must be noted that the non-quarter tone form is the one similar to
Bhairav and Mayamalagowla. The Double harmonic scale has radial
symmetry which means that it is symmetric around the centre note. This
seven-note scale is the only one that is perfectly balanced. When the
pitches of this scale are depicted on a circle as points, the centre of the
circle becomes their average position.
