Shankarabharanam
Dheerasankarabharanam or Sankarabharanam is just one note different from its predecessor Harikambhoji and this is the reason why shades of each other are found in their respective compositions. Sankarabharanam is the 29th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and is an evening raga. Thanks to the many beautiful gamakas, this raga has been bestowed with the name ‘Sarva Gamaka Maanika Rakti Ragam’.
Arohana: S R2 G3 M1 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadham. Ga, Ma, Pa, Ni are ragachaaya swaras. Being the fifth raga in the Bana chakra, it has the mnemonic name Bana-Ma. When you sing prathi madhyamam instead of shuddha madhyamam in this raga, you get Kalyani, the 65th Melakarta raga.
The counterparts of Sankarabharanam in Hindustani and western music are Bilaval and major scale/Ionian mode respectively. In Tamil music, the raga is called Pazham Panjura. Its melodious, smooth flowing bhava when combined with an aura of majesty paves way for unending possibilities to use its notes for compositions. Sankarabharanam thus becomes a royal raga whose presence becomes inevitable in Indian and world music.
An interesting fact about this raga is that its notes are believed to represent the ornaments of Lord Shankara – Sa: Sarpa, Ri: Rudraksh, Ga: Ganga, Ma: Mriga, Pa: Pushpa, Da: Damroo and Ni: Nishkara. The notes are very apt to be used in compositions like varnam, swarjathi, geetham, padham, keerthanam, thillana and krithi.
Sankarabharanam boasts of being a raga that has a large number of janya ragas like Hamsadhwani, Bilahari, Jana Ranjani, Arabhi and Shuddha Saveri among many others. These janya ragas take birth because of the even spacing of swaras in this raga. Many of these ragas are equally or more popular than the parent raga and create a plethora of moods in listeners.
Shifting the notes of Sankarabharanam using Graha bhedam gives Hanumatodi, Kalyani, Kharaharapriya, Natabhairavi and Harikambhoji. Some of the famous compositions in this raga include Nrityati Nrityati and Chalamela by Swathi Thirunal, Eduta Nilacite and Maryada Kadura by Thyagaraja, Yenu Olle Hariye by Kanaka Dasa and Sarojadala Netri by Syama Sastri.
