Known as Phenadhyuti in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, Raknangi is the 2nd raga in the 72 Melakarta system of Carnatic music. The word Raknangi means ‘gem-like bodied one’.

The difference in arohna and avarohana of Phenadhyuti is as follows.
Arohana: S R1 M1 P D1 P N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D1 P M1 G1 R1 S
The mnemonic name of this raga is Indu-Sri and is considered as the second raga in the first chakra Indu. It is a sampoorna raga that has the notes shadjam, shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadham. When you change the shuddha madhyamam to prati madhyamam, it becomes the raga Jalarnavam.
There are only a few janya ragas for Ratnangi like Phenadhyuti, GanaMukhari, Revathi etc. Malayalam movie song enthusiasts have a special love for the song ‘Sreelathikakal’ which is a beautiful composition in the popular raga Revathi.
Some of the non-movie classical pieces of Ratnangi are Tarunam ide by Koteeswara Iyer, Kalasavardhijam by Thyagaraja and Sree Gurum by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. Unlike its janya raga Revathi, it does not have many compositions both in the world of classical music and film songs and it is rarely heard in concerts.
When shifted using Graha bhedam, the notes of Ratnangi gives two other melakarta ragas, Gamanashrama and Jhankaradhwani. This means that the relative note frequencies remain the same but the shadjam is shifted to the next note in the raga. This is a vivadi mela with very few compositions.
