Naganandini
It is not difficult to find the literal meaning of ‘Naganandini’ when you split it into two. The meaning of the word is ‘daughter of naga’ where naga is used to mean mountain. So the name refers to none other than Goddess Parvathi. This 30th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music is called Nagabharanam in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music.
Arohana: S R2 G3 M1 P D3 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 P M1 G3 R2 S
The notes are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, shatsruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. Naganandini occurs as the sixth and final raga of Bana chakra and has mnemonic name Bana-Sha. It goes without saying that it is a sampoorna raga with all the seven notes. Chitrambari, the 66th Melakarta raga is the prathi madhyamam equivalent of this raga. When you shift the notes of Naganandini using Graha bhedam, two ragas are obtained – Bhavapriya and Vagadheeshwari.
With only a few janya ragas like Samanta and Gambheeravani, Naganandini is often not a choice of musicians in concerts. A few compositions in this raga are Sattaleni dinamu by Thyagaraja, Nagabharanam by Muthuswami Dikshitar and Dakshayani rakshamam by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. In the movie industry, there is just one Malayalam song set to this raga – Ascharyachoodamani from the movie theekkanal.
