Kokilapriya
Yet another raga that has very few compositions in the world of classical music and movies, Kokilapriya is not much familiar with the regular audience. Kokilapriya is the 11th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and means ‘the one dear to the koel’.
Arohana: S R1 G2 M1 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D2 P M1 G2 R1 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadham. This sampoorna raga is the fifth one in the Netra chakra and has mnemonic name Netra-Ma. Changing the shuddha madhyamam to prati madhyamam gives the 47th Melakarta raga Suvarnangi.
In Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, Kokilapriya is called Kokilaravam. The notes are similar to that of Kokilapriya but the order is zig zag making it vakra. This shadava-sampoorna raga has arohana and avarohana as follows.
Arohana: S R1 M1 M1 P M1 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D2 D2 P M1 G2 R1 S
Kokilapriya has a few janya ragas including Chitramani, Kowmari and Shudha Lalitha among others. Some well-known compositions of this raga are Dasarathe Dayasaradhe by Thyagaraja, Vadamela Radha Manohara by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Neeke Abhimanamu by Mysore Vasudevachar.
When you shift the notes of Kokilapriya using Graha bhedam the raga Rishabhapriya is obtained.
