Mechakalyani
Mechakalyani or Kalyani doesn’t need an introduction to South Indian music lovers. Whether you take the classic music genre or the movie industry, you will find umpteen compositions in this 65th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. Equivalent to Lydian mode in Western music, this raga is not unfamiliar to Hindustani music. The Hindustani counterpart is known as Yaman.

The notes of Mechakalyani are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. The raga is special in that it was the first raga discovered with prati madhyamam. The process of Graha bhedam of the ancient Shadja Grama revealed this raga which literally means ‘she who causes auspicious things’.
Being the fifth raga in the Rudra chakra, Mechakalyani has the mnemonic name Rudra-Ma. The auspicious nature of the raga makes it appear in the beginning of concerts. The recital usually includes elaborate alapana. When the prati madhyamam of the raga is replaced with shuddha madhyamam, the 29th Melakarta raga Shankarabharanam is obtained. This sampoorna raga is recited with all higher notes.
All the swaras of Mechakalyani are theevra swaras. They are well suited for janda swara and daattu swara prayogas. Ri, Ga, Ma and Ni are the raga chaaya swaras. Many musicians consider this as the queen of the raga family. It is also sometimes referred to as Santha Kalyani. The all-time raga is best for singing in the evenings and evokes rasas like vatsalya, shringara and bhakti. It is believed that the raga wipes away all feelings of fear and brings home comfort.
Around 122 ragas are derived from Mechakalyani including Mohanakalyani, Hamir Kalyani, Yamuna Kalyani etc which are very popular. The ragas obtained by shifting the notes using Graha bhedam are Shankarabharanam, Hanumatodi, Natabhairavi, Harikambhoji and Kharaharapriya. The famous compositions in this raga are Kantimati Karunamrta by Subbarama Dikshitar, Nidhi chala sugama by Thyagaraja, Unnai allal by PApanasam Sivan and Sadanandame by Koteeswara Iyer. It is not wrong to say that the film industry thrives with this pleasing raga.
