Varunapriya
The 24th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Varunapriya, is referred to as Viravasantam in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of music. This is a sampoorna raga that is the sixth and last raga in the Veda chakra with mnemonic name Veda-Sha.
You might have heard about Amritavarshini raga of Carnatic music and Meghamalhar raga of Hindustani that is believed to bless the world with rains and monsoons. Varunapriya is yet another not-so-popular raga that is associated with rains.
Arohana: S R2 G2 M1 P D3 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D3 P M1 G2 R2 S
The swaras are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, shatsruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadham. The notes Da and Ni in the arohana are varjya swaras. The 60th Melakarta raga Neetimati is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Varunapriya.
Varunapriya becomes very unique among all the other Melakarta ragas in that it does not have any janya ragas. Some of the compositions in this raga are Samashrayami Sada by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Yemani Pogadudu by Thyagaraja and Singara kumara by Koteeswara Iyer. Shifting the notes of Varunapriya using Graha bhedam yields the minor raga Ragavardhini.
Unfortunately, there are no film songs that are set to Varunapriya which is a vivadi mela. We did find a Malayalam song in this raga named Aayiram Thaamara from the album Bhadranjali sung by Madhu Balakrishn
