Suvarnangi
Suvarnangi occurs as the fifth raga in the Vasu chakra and has mnemonic name Vasu-Ma. This raga meaning ‘the golden bodied one’ is the 47th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music. It is commonly referred to as Souveeram or Souviram in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music.
Arohana: S R1 G2 M2 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D2 P M2 G2 R1 S
The swaras are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. Replacing the prati madhyamam of this sampoorna raga with shuddha madhyamam gives Kokilapriya, the 11th Melakarta raga. Musicians opine that this raga is not much suited for alapana.
There are only very few ragas derived from Suvarnangi like Abhiru and Rathika. A few compositions in this raga are Iha para sukha by Koteeswara Iyer, Sarasa souveera by Muthuswami Dikshitar and Jaya jaganmayi by Rukminibai Thampuratti. Shifting the notes of Suvarnangi using Graha bhedam gives no other raga. There is one Malayalam song set to this raga – Kaadambuzha theertham aadan from the album Pradakshinam.
