Shadvidamargini
Known as Stavarajam in Muthuswami Dikashitar school of Carnatic music, Shadvidamargini literally means ‘the one with the road to a hundred forms of knowledge’. This is the 4th raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music and has a slight resemblance to the Khatma raga in Hindustani music.
Arohana: S R1 G2 M2 P D2 N2 S
Avarohana: S N2 D2 P M2 G2 R1 S
The notes of this raga are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam. Shadvidamargini is the fourth raga in the Vasu chakra with mnemonic name Vasu-Bhu. This sampoorna raga is the prati madhyamam equivalent of Natakapriya, the 10th Melakarta raga.
Shadvidamargini has a few janya ragas like Ganahemavati, Indhudhanyasi and Shreekanti. Some of the popular compositions in this raga are Andaranga Bhakthi by Koteeswara Iyer, Jnanam Osaga Rada by Thyagaraja and Haimavate bhaja manasa by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. The notes of Shadvidamargini give way to Nasikabhooshani raga when shifted using Graha bhedam.
