Pavani
The 41st raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music is given the name Pavani meaning ‘the purifier’. Known as Kumbhini in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music, this vivadi mela is not much suited for alapana and hence there are only a few compositions set to it.
Arohana: S R1 G1 M2 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D2 P M2 G1 R1 S
The notes are shadjam, shuddha rishabham, shuddha gandharam, prati madhyamam, panjamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. It has all the seven notes making it a sampoorna raga. Pavani is the prati madhyamam equivalent of the 5th Melakarta raga Manavathi.
Occurring as fifth raga in the Rishi chakra, it has the mnemonic name Rishi-Ma. Some of the janya ragas of Pavani are Chandrajyothi, Prabhavali, Poornapanchamam etc. A few compositions in this raga are Anjaade by Koteeswara iyer, Sachidanandamaya by Muthuswami Dikshitar and Jaya dhanada sakha by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. There is only one Tamil movie song set to Pavanai – Paartha Vizhi from the movie Gunaa.
