Kharaharapriya
Whether it is the unending list of janya ragas of Kharaharapriya or the parent raga itself, musicians have left no stone unturned in using this raga to give life to umpteen numbers of compositions using its multiple rasas. This 22nd raga of the Melakarta system of Carnatic music has all the seven notes beautifully crafted to give more than 90 janya raga. It is the fourth raga in the Veda chakra with mnemonic name Veda-Bhu.
It is believed that the original name of the raga Harapriya was made to suit Katapayadi formula and got its new name Kharaharapriya. The notes of this raga bring about a feeling of sadness, pity and more prominently karuna in the listeners. The Dorian mode of western music and Kafi thaat of Hindustani music are said to be the equivalents of this melodious raga.
Many stories are popular regarding how the raga got its distinct name. Kharaharapriya literally means the beloved of Khara demon’s killer, Lord Rama. Thyagaraja held a special place for this raga in his heart and made many songs in this when it was in the verge of extinction in the 18th century.

The swaras of Kharaharapriya are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, Chathusruthi dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadham. The prati madhyamam equivalent of this raga is Hemavati which is the 58th Melakarta raga. The evenly spaced notes of Kharaharapriya along with the many kinds of gamakas involved make this raga quite flexible leveraging the notes to make way for amazing music.
The fluid nature of Kharaharapriya is seen in the elaborate and long alapanas. In order to highlight the karuna bhava of the raga, it is recommended to sing it in a slow or medium pace. The chaya and nyasa swaras are Ri, Ga, Da and Ni and amsha swaras are Ri and Pa. This versatility of the raga paves way to several janya ragas like Abhogi, abheri, Kapi, Madhyamavati and Sriranjani that are often included more than the janaka raga in concerts.
Some of the popular compositions among the many in Kharaharapriya are Rama Niyada, Pakkala Nilabadi by Thyagaraja, Satatam thaavaka by Swathi Thirunal, Moovasai konda thirumal by Muthiah Bhagavatar, Sundara Natarajam by Oothukadu Venkata Kavi and Karunajalarase rama by K. C. Kesava Pillai. When shifted using Graha bhedam, this raga gives five ragas – Hanumatodi, Kalyani, Shankarabharanam, Natabhairavi and Harikambhoji.
Since karuna and melancholy are rasas highly used in Indian music, this raga has given melody to many a movie song. All the South Indian movie industries have movie songs set to this raga and it has also appeared in a few album songs.
