Gangeyabhooshani
The 33rd raga in the Melakarta system of Carnatic music, Gangeyabhushani is also known as Gangatarangini in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. The raga evokes a feeling of devotion that has led to compositions praising God.
Arohana: S R3 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S
Avarohana: S N3 D1 P M1 G3 R3 S
The notes of Gangeyabhushani are shadjam, shatsruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panjamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kakali nishadam. This raga occurs as the third one in the Ritu chakra and has mnemonic name Ritu-Go. Dhatuvardani, the 69th Melakarta raga is the prathi madhyamam equivalent of this sampoorna raga. Shifting the notes of this raga using Graha bhedam gives the raga Neetimati.
Surprisingly, Gangeyabhushani has no janya ragas and you can imagine how rare the raga must be heard in concerts. A few compositions include Varadaraja avava by Muthuswami Dikshitar, Sulabha Poojeya Maadi by Purandara Dasaru and Evvare Ramayya by Thyagaraja.
Although Gangeyabhushani has not been used in movie songs, there are a few Malayalam album songs in this raga like Nirayum Snehathal from Sneha Dhara, Innum Guruvayooril from Gopeechandanam and Thaaraka Brahmam from
Ayyane Ayyan.
